The Turkish Riviera has a Mediterranean climate - hot summers, mild winters. But "mild winters" and "hot summers" are blurred. Which month suits which type of traveller? Here's an honest monthly overview that will save you from high season pitfalls.

January-February: Mild but calm

Daytime temperatures between 12-16°C, nights can drop to 5°C. It rains about 10 days a month, often briefly but heavily. At 16-17°C, the sea is too cold for swimming. Many hotels and restaurants in Side, Alanya and Kemer are closed. Good for: Sightseeing in Antalya (cool pleasant, ancient sites empty), hiking on the Lycian Way (perfect temperature), cheap city breaks (prices sometimes 60% below high season). Not for: Beach holidays.

March: Spring awakening

Warmer (15-19°C), less rain. The bougainvillea is starting to bloom, almond trees are in blossom, spring is coming in full force. Water temperature still at 17-18°C, too cold for most people. First boat trips start at the end of March. Good for: Nature lovers, photographers, hiking (wildflowers!), sightseeing. Tip: Easter in the second half of March can be expensive.

April-May: Golden spring

The sweet spot for many travellers. 20-26°C during the day, sun almost every day, water temperature from May at 20-22°C - still fresh, but suitable for swimming. Tourist crowds still manageable, hotels have opened, prices moderate. Good for: Active travellers (sightseeing, hiking, first beach walks, boat trips). Ideal for Cappadocia balloon trips (mild weather, clear visibility). Best time to travel for the "complete experience".

June: Summer with moderation

28-32°C, water temperature 24-25°C, hardly any rain. The high season starts. Crowds of tourists arrive, hotel prices rise. Still bearable for sightseeing, but hiking becomes exhausting during the day. Good for: Classic beach holidays, boat trips, families (school holidays not yet everywhere).

July-August: Full high season

33-38°C, water temperature 27-28°C. It is hot. Sightseeing between 11am and 4pm is unpleasant or even dangerous (Termessos or Aspendos in high summer = not recommended). Beaches and hotels overcrowded, prices at maximum. Good for: Pure swimming, aqua parks, evening activities. Not ideal for: Sightseeing tours, ancient sites, hiking. Tip: active activities in the morning before 9am and in the evening after 5pm, pool/shade at lunchtime.

September: Golden late summer

The best secret of the Turkish Riviera. 28-32°C, water temperature 26-27°C (warmer than in June!), hardly any rain, the high season crowds leave. The second half of September is often the ideal time to visit - warm for swimming, cool enough for activities, moderate prices. If you only go on holiday once a year, then here.

October: Indian Summer

First half still perfect (24-28°C, water temperature 24°C), second half gets cooler but still pleasant. Tourists have gone, prices continue to fall, many insider tip bays are yours alone. Good for: Quiet nature holidays, ancient sites, last boat trips, hiking. Best time to visit for hikers and nature photographers.

November-December: Low season

Rain comes from mid-November, temperatures 15-20°C, cool nights. Beaches belong to seagulls. Many restaurants and smaller hotels in tourist resorts close. Antalya itself remains open, you can experience the city in a relaxed way. Good for: Antalya city breaks, thermal baths, hammam weekends, very favourable hotel prices. December is the best time for hiking (mild) and skiing in Saklıkent (90 minutes from Antalya, snow).

The best time to visit depends on your travelling style - but the universal recommendation is the second half of May or the first half of September. Both periods offer warm weather, swimmable sea, moderate prices and manageable tourist crowds. If you are flexible, you should avoid July and August, except for pure pool and beach holidays.
